Floorshields Explains Epoxy Coatings

Epoxy coating has grown in popularity over the years staking it’s crown as one of the most popular floor coating options. An epoxy coating is a compound consisting of two distinct elements: an epoxy resin and a polyamine hardener (this is also referred to as a catalyst). When the two components are mixed, the resin and hardener engage in a chemical reaction that bond together and cure. When the epoxy coating is fully bonded and cured, the resulting product is extremely durable. This is why it’s used on so many different surfaces from oil tankers to garages and commercial kitchens.

Epoxy coating is as tough and durable a finish that one can find for protecting their garage floor, but it also has another great benefit: the epoxy transforms your boring or ugly cement into an instantly attractive-looking professional surface. The reason why this type of garage flooring became so popular quickly among homeowners is because in recent years homes have been undergoing more renovations than ever before- with many people adding on additional living space to accommodate growing families, turning garages into bonus rooms.

WHAT IS GARAGE FLOOR EPOXY?

What is epoxy? A lot of people ask that question because marketing campaigns have made it a little confusing. Epoxy is not paint. An epoxy garage floor coating is a resin-based product that dries to form an incredibly tough and durable bond to concrete. When concrete is opened up through diamond grinding or acid etching, it becomes porous, and when epoxy is applied over the porous concrete surface, it creates a bond that can last longer than humans will. An epoxy garage coating when applied properly can stand up well against chemicals like gasoline which can cause other products to deteriorate.

Epoxy is a type of resin that, when mixed with hardener and applied to an object in layers, can form a durable coating. The epoxy resins react with the polyamine hardeners on contact which starts chemical reactions that produce polymer structures close together.

As these two substances come into contact they begin their curing process and create an exothermic reaction where heat will be created as well as cross-linking bonding molecules being consumed by this intense heating up process. This creates something much thicker than paint but bonds tenaciously so it won’t easily wear off or chip away at any time soon!

There are garage floor paints but they have a small amount of epoxy mixed with them. These are not 100% solids epoxy and are known as 1 part epoxy paint. So, we’re setting the record straight, concrete paint is different than epoxy. Read our full guide on the difference between concrete paint and epoxy coatings for more information.
